Oakland, CA — Integrity Logic announced the release of Geology NY, a new version of the GIS for the iPhone platform, covering the New York area. This release focuses on the physical geography and geology of the three states, and contains 20 layers of information, which can be superimposed, mixed and rearranged in any desired combination.
Like its sister applications Geology CA, which covers California, and Geology TX, which covers Texas, Geology NY contains a number of data layers which can be combined and moved in any desired way:

The application is available immediately in the Apple App Store and is priced at $9.99.
St. Charles, IL, US: In an effort to ensure their compliance with North Dakota’s state-mandated agricultural assessment standards, Emmons County, North Dakota (in the US), has selected Sidwell Company to provide professional GIS services to aid its assessment officials in the task of calculating soils valuations for agricultural tax parcels. Sidwell will also provide a GPS unit that will be used for the purposes of locating points in their GIS and mapping county infrastructure, such as bridges, culverts, etc.
The company will provide the jurisdiction with agricultural parcel file development services by creating a digital GIS parcel file for all of the county’s agricultural parcels, to be used in conjunction with the soils map layer, to support soils computations using the Farmland Assessment and Report Management System (FARMS)—an ArcGIS-compliant software solution for agricultural tax assessments. The firm will further enhance Emmons County’s GIS data in the urban areas by adding annotation such as lot and block numbers and subdivision names to the GIS files.
One distinctive advantage of this ArcGIS-compliant software solution for agricultural tax assessment is the ease with which the generated data can be exported to various formats for the purposes of complete system integration. Additional features of the software module include being able to set up user-defined tolerances for easily identifying discrepancies between assessed and measured acreages, the ability to then normalise these acreage discrepancies and the capabilities to create customised thematic maps for presentation, set spot symbol placements and record related comments for each parcel.
In addition, Sidwell will provide Emmons County with on-site, specialised training that focuses on the use of the FARMS software extension within ArcGIS 9.3, covering basic operations for processing agricultural parcels, all processing tools and reporting features of the system and the different user customisations that are available within the reporting application.
With the costs of production seemingly out of control in recent years, the need for supplying the right amount of nutrients at the right location and at the right time is becoming increasingly important. The University of Nebraska Extension in Hall County is considering writing GIS modules for the more popular GIS programs. Among the programs is a software program called "Ag-Leader - SMS." This program, while ready to use off the shelf, still needs nutrient algorithms programmed to make it function with ease for Variable Rate Treatments (VRT).
Farmers today may not have the time or the resources readily available to create VRTs for nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, zinc and ag lime. Further study is ongoing to determine whether UNL Extension should consider this as a viable program and subsequent workshops may be established if the need is justifiable. The Nebraska Agricultural Technologies Association is a membership network that provides a venue for members to share agricultural research experiences and related knowledge with each other. NeATA was founded in 2001 by innovative Nebraska farmers, ranchers, agribusiness representatives, and UNL Extension. NeATA strives to identify and explore new technologies practical for agriculture with consideration to financial returns for producers. Identifying agronomic practices that reduce economic and environmental risks, thus promoting the stewardship of land water resources, is paramount to this effort.
Nebraska Ag Water Management Demonstration Network (NAWMDN)
We have several producers in the project, but it would be great to have many more from the Hall County area. The Central Platte Natural Resource District is considering a cost share on ET gauges and Watermark Soil Sensors. The NAWMDN program has been successful because UNL Extension and NRD personnel are working one-on-one with producers and then producers are sharing their success stories with other producers. Producers surveyed in 2007 and 2008 indicated that on average they've reduced irrigation applications and associated energy saving by 2 acre-inches for both corn and soybeans. We hope you'll consider giving the NAWMDN a try in 2010. Stop by our Extension office or the NRD for more information.

In recent years, Remote Sensing and GIS techniques have emerged as one of the most versatile decision making tools in the geospatial domain with increasing applications in new areas. Integrated application of these two techniques culminates in harnessing the natural resources with incredible speed and reasonable accuracy, even from inaccessible areas, to help the process of planning the integrated development of a region. They are widely used in monitoring, management and planning in diverse fields of activities, such as, sustainable development, infrastructure development, disaster management, environmental monitoring, resource inventory, rural and urban planning etc. Remotely Sensed data from Aerial photographs and Satellites, combined with GPS serve as the basic database in GIS for multi-criteria decision making in several applications, viz., groundwater and mineral exploration, land use / land cover, wasteland management, inland water resources, mining, agriculture, forestry, coastal mapping and developm nt, land records, health care, socio-economic, crime investigation etc., to name a few.
